eHealth Exchange is a U.S. health information exchange network that enables electronic sharing of health information among participating organizations. It originated from the federal Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN/NwHIN) initiative and was later operated in the private sector before becoming an independent nonprofit organization in 2018. In December 2023, eHealth Exchange was designated as a Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), a nationwide interoperability framework overseen by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).
History The eHealth Exchange network traces its roots to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN/NwHIN), a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiative associated with ONC to support interoperable health information exchange. In 2012, stewardship of the NHIN Exchange was transitioned to a private-sector nonprofit entity (Healtheway, Inc.), which later became known as The Sequoia Project. In 2018, eHealth Exchange became a separate organization independent from The Sequoia Project. ONC designated eHealth Exchange as one of the initial QHINs when TEFCA became operational in December 2023.
