Gordonibacter is a genus of Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria in the family Eggerthellaceae. Members of the genus have been isolated from the human intestinal tract, and motility varies among species.
Characteristics The type strain of Gordonibacter pamelaeae was isolated from the colon of a patient with Crohn's disease. It is non-motile, whereas Gordonibacter urolithinfaciens and Gordonibacter faecis are motile. G. urolithinfaciens was originally isolated from human feces and can transform ellagic acid, a dietary polyphenol-derived compound, into urolithin metabolites. G. faecis, which was also isolated from human feces, converts ellagic acid into urolithin C.
Taxonomy G. pamelaeae is the type species of Gordonibacter. The generic name honours microbiologist Jeffrey I. Gordon and combines his surname with the Neo-Latin word bacter, meaning "rod".
