Gordonibacter pamelaeae is a species of Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria in the family Eggerthellaceae. It is the type species of the genus Gordonibacter.
Description The type strain, 7-10-1-b, was isolated from a colonic biopsy obtained from a patient with Crohn's disease. Its cells are short rods or coccobacilli, and growth occurs under anaerobic conditions at 37 °C. The organism is catalase-positive. Motility may vary among strains. The type strain was reported to be motile by means of a subpolar flagellum, whereas a bloodstream isolate described in 2010 was non-motile.
Metabolism G. pamelaeae can transform ellagic acid under anaerobic culture conditions. The metabolites produced sequentially include urolithin M-5, urolithin M-6, and urolithin C.
Clinical isolation A 2010 case report documented G. pamelaeae bacteremia in a patient with disseminated rectosigmoid carcinoma. The organism was recovered in pure culture from an anaerobic blood-culture bottle and identified using phenotypic testing and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The patient recovered following treatment with amoxicillin–clavulanate.
Taxonomy The specific epithet honours Pamela Lee Oxley, a biochemist, environmentalist, and educator.
