Its cells are short rods or coccobacilli, and growth occurs under anaerobic conditions at 37 °C. The organism is catalase-positive. Motility may vary among strains. The type strain was reported to be motile by means of a subpolar flagellum, whereas a bloodstream isolate described in 2010 was non-motile.
