Haar wavelet

Haar wavelet is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Haar wavelet rather than just read about it. In short: In mathematics, the Haar wavelet is a sequence of rescaled "square-shaped" functions which together form a wavelet family or basis. Wavelet analysis is similar to Fourier analysis in that it allows a target function over an interval to be represented in terms of an orthonormal basis.

Key takeaways

  • Haar wavelet belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Haar wavelet to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Haar wavelet from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

In mathematics, the Haar wavelet is a sequence of rescaled "square-shaped" functions which together form a wavelet family or basis. Wavelet analysis is similar to Fourier analysis in that it allows a target function over an interval to be represented in terms of an orthonormal basis. The Haar sequence is now recognised as the first known wavelet basis and is extensively used as a teaching example. The Haar sequence was proposed in 1909 by Alfréd Haar. Haar used these functions to give an example of an orthonormal system for the space of square-integrable functions on the unit interval [0, 1]. The study of wavelets, and even the term "wavelet", did not come until much later. As a special case of the Daubechies wavelet, the Haar wavelet is also known as Db1. The Haar wavelet is also the simplest possible wavelet. The technical disadvantage of the Haar wavelet is that it is not continuous, and therefore not differentiable. This property can, however, be an advantage for the analysis of signals with sudden transitions (discrete signals), such as monitoring of tool failure in machines. The Haar wavelet's mother wavelet function ψ ( t ) {\displaystyle \psi (t)} can be described as

ψ ( t ) = { 1 0 ≤ t < 1 2 , − 1 1 2 ≤ t < 1 , 0 otherwise. {\displaystyle \psi (t)={\begin{cases}1\quad &0\leq t<{\frac {1}{2}},\\-1&{\frac {1}{2}}\leq t<1,\\0&{\mbox{otherwise.}}\end{cases}}}

Its scaling function φ ( t ) {\displaystyle \varphi (t)} can be described as

φ ( t ) = { 1 0 ≤ t < 1 , 0 otherwise. {\displaystyle \varphi (t)={\begin{cases}1\quad &0\leq t<1,\\0&{\mbox{otherwise.}}\end{cases}}}

Haar functions and Haar system For every pair n, k of integers in Z {\displaystyle \mathbb {Z} } , the Haar function ψn,k is defined on the real line R {\displaystyle \mathbb {R} } by the formula

ψ n , k ( t ) = 2 n / 2 ψ ( 2 n t − k ) , t ∈ R . {\displaystyle \psi _{n,k}(t)=2^{n/2}\psi (2^{n}t-k),\quad t\in \mathbb {R} .}

This function is supported on the right-open interval In,k = [ k2−n, (k+1)2−n), i.e., it vanishes outside that interval. It has integral 0 and norm 1 in the Hilbert space L2( R {\displaystyle \mathbb {R} } ),

∫ R ψ n , k ( t ) d t = 0 , ‖ ψ n , k ‖ L 2 ( R ) 2 = ∫ R ψ n , k ( t ) 2 d t = 1. {\displaystyle \int _{\mathbb {R} }\psi _{n,k}(t)\,dt=0,\quad \|\psi _{n,k}\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb {R} )}^{2}=\int _{\mathbb {R} }\psi _{n,k}(t)^{2}\,dt=1.}

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Haar wavelet

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Haar wavelet claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Haar wavelet before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Haar wavelet ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Haar wavelet

In research
Haar wavelet appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Haar wavelet in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Haar wavelet is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Orthogonal wavelets, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Haar wavelet outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.

Frequently asked questions

What is Haar wavelet in simple terms?

In mathematics, the Haar wavelet is a sequence of rescaled "square-shaped" functions which together form a wavelet family or basis. Wavelet analysis is similar to Fourier analysis in that it allows a target function over an interval to be represented in terms of an orthonormal basis.

Why does Haar wavelet matter?

Because it connects several science ideas at once: it gives you a definition you can apply, a quantity you can calculate, and a way to check whether a result is plausible.

How should I study Haar wavelet?

Read the excerpt, restate it from memory, then work through the examples and applications listed on this page. The five-step study plan above takes about twenty minutes.
