Hans Jørgen Koch

Hans Jørgen Koch is a physics topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Hans Jørgen Koch rather than just read about it. In short: Hans Jørgen Koch is the former head of Nordic Energy Research, a platform under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In the periods 1982–1994 and 2002–2014, Koch worked in the ministries responsible for energy issues in Denmark.

Key takeaways

  • Hans Jørgen Koch belongs to physics; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Hans Jørgen Koch to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Hans Jørgen Koch from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Hans Jørgen Koch is the former head of Nordic Energy Research, a platform under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In the periods 1982–1994 and 2002–2014, Koch worked in the ministries responsible for energy issues in Denmark. He was director general, deputy permanent secretary of state, and several times acting minister. He was chairman of the Energy Committee of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In 1983–1994, Koch was governor in the International Atomic Energy Agency. In 1990–1994, he was chairman of the Committee on Research and Technology of the International Energy Agency. In 1994–2002, Koch was director on energy efficiency, renewable energy and research, development and deployment in the IEA. After returning to Denmark he was a member of the Governing Board of the International Energy Agency. In 2014, he was chairman of the committee on renewable energy of the IEA.

Hans Jørgen Koch was the Vice Chairman of the intergovernmental final preparatory conference for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Madrid in 23–24 October 2008 and the founding conference held in Bonn on 26 January 2009. He was also a candidate for Director General of IRENA. Since 2014, he is executive director of Nordic Energy Research.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Hans Jørgen Koch

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Hans Jørgen Koch claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In physics, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Hans Jørgen Koch before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Hans Jørgen Koch ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Hans Jørgen Koch

In research
Hans Jørgen Koch appears in physics research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Hans Jørgen Koch in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Hans Jørgen Koch is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Danish scientists, Energy in Denmark, International Atomic Energy Agency officials, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Hans Jørgen Koch outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.

Frequently asked questions

What is Hans Jørgen Koch in simple terms?

Hans Jørgen Koch is the former head of Nordic Energy Research, a platform under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. In the periods 1982–1994 and 2002–2014, Koch worked in the ministries responsible for energy issues in Denmark.

Why does Hans Jørgen Koch matter?

Because it connects several physics ideas at once: it gives you a definition you can apply, a quantity you can calculate, and a way to check whether a result is plausible.

How should I study Hans Jørgen Koch?

Read the excerpt, restate it from memory, then work through the examples and applications listed on this page. The five-step study plan above takes about twenty minutes.
