HawkQuest

HawkQuest is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand HawkQuest rather than just read about it. Key takeaways

  • HawkQuest belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect HawkQuest to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of HawkQuest from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

HawkQuest, founded in 1986 by Kin Quitugua, is an environmental education organization based in Parker, Colorado, which uses participatory lectures including live raptors to help people "understand and appreciate the interaction of wild living things in their natural environment." HawkQuest has partnered with Xcel Energy to create classroom programs that use the bird cams deployed by the energy company.

Founder Kin Quitugua, master falconer and founder of HawkQuest, was born in Guam and moved to Colorado with his family when he was young. In college, he met master falconer Rick Cole, who took him on as an apprentice. After becoming a master falconer himself, he founded HawkQuest to teach others about nature with the help of his birds.

The birds As of 2010, HawkQuest had 28 individual eagles, falcons, owls, and hawks. The 15 species represented are bald eagle, golden eagle, American kestrel, peregrine falcon, prairie falcon, barred owl, burrowing owl, barn owl, great horned owl, spectacled owl, Eurasian eagle-owl, Eastern screech owl, ferruginous hawk, red-tailed hawk, and Harris's hawk. All of these birds are either injured or have been imprinted to humans and would not be able to survive in the wild.

Programs HawkQuest provides interactive lectures to groups of all ages, bringing the birds to schools, nature centers, and other venues. HawkQuest raptors can be seen at close range at events such as Native American markets, renaissance festivals, educational symposiums, and craft fairs. Their classroom-in-the-wild program takes students outdoors into the birds' natural environment. They will set up opportunities for bird and photo enthusiasts to photograph the raptors in the wild. In 2007, HawkQuest presented their message to almost 1.5 million people in 555 events.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with HawkQuest

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what HawkQuest claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to HawkQuest before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about HawkQuest ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of HawkQuest

In research
HawkQuest appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses HawkQuest in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
HawkQuest is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Denver metropolitan area, Education in Douglas County, Colorado, Environmental education in the United States, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for HawkQuest outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
