Key takeaways

  • Henry Bowman Brady belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Henry Bowman Brady to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Henry Bowman Brady from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Henry Bowman Brady (23 February 1835 Gateshead, England – 10 January 1891 Bournemouth) was a British micropalaeontologist.

Life He was the second son of Henry Brady, Surgeon of Gateshead, and his wife Hannah Bowman of Derbyshire. Henry and his older brother George Stewardson Brady were both educated at the Friends' School, Ackworth and at Bootham school, York, where they were schoolfellows of the botanist John Gilbert Baker, and the Rowntree brothers Joseph, John, and Henry, of the famous cocoa business which bore their name. Brady became a fellow of the Linnean Society on 17 March 1859, but resigned in 1887; he was also a fellow of the Geological Society from 1864, of the Royal Society from 1874, serving on its council in 1888, and of the Zoological Society from 1888.

Works

Henry Brady published much on foraminiferans, and several species were named after him, including Valvulinerea bradyana (Fornasini, 1900), Trifarina bradyi Cushman, 1923, Rosalina bradyi Cushman, 1915, Robertinoides bradyi (Cushman & Parker, 1936), Neoeponides bradyi (Le Calvez, 1974), Fursenkoina bradyi (Cushman, 1922), Evolvocassidulina bradyi Norman, 1881, Ehrenbergina bradyi Cushman, 1922, Cassidulinoides bradyi (Norman, 1881), Parrina bradyi (Millett, 1898), Labrospira bradyi (Robertson, 1891), Karreriella bradyi (Cushman, 1911), Hemisphaerammina bradyi (Loeblich & Tappan, 1957), Dorothia bradyana (Cushman, 1936).

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Henry Bowman Brady

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Henry Bowman Brady claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Henry Bowman Brady before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Henry Bowman Brady ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Henry Bowman Brady

In research
Henry Bowman Brady appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Henry Bowman Brady in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Henry Bowman Brady is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1835 births, 1891 deaths, British palaeontologists, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Henry Bowman Brady outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
