Key takeaways

  • Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Hoogezand-Sappemeer (Dutch pronunciation: [ɦoːɣəˌzɑnt sɑpəˈmeːr] ; abbreviation: Hgz) is an unstaffed railway station in Hoogezand in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Martenshoek and Sappemeer Oost in the province of Groningen. Train services started in 1868 and the current station building was completed in 1989. There are currently three train services, all operated by Arriva. Among the direct destinations are Groningen to the west, Veendam to the southeast, and Winschoten, Bad Nieuweschans, and Leer (Germany) to the east.

Location The railway station is located at the Stationsweg in the municipality of Midden-Groningen in the south of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. It is situated on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between the railway stations Martenshoek and Sappemeer Oost.

Building and layout

The former station building was completed in 1865. It was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode. The building was demolished in 1989. The signal box from the station is now at the Railway Museum in Utrecht. The current station building was completed in 1989. It was designed by Rob Steenhuis. At the station, the double track has two separate platforms.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station

In research
Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures completed in 1865, Buildings and structures completed in 1989, Buildings and structures demolished in 1989, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Hoogezand-Sappemeer railway station outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
