Key takeaways

  • Huntington's Disease Society of America belongs to biology; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Huntington's Disease Society of America to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Huntington's Disease Society of America from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Huntington's Disease Society of America is a US non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by Huntington's disease (HD), an incurable, genetically transmitted degenerative disease of the nervous system that affects movement, thinking, and some aspects of personality. The Huntington's Disease Society of America is the largest 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by Huntington's Disease. Founded in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie, wife of folk legend Woody Guthrie, who died of HD, the Society works to provide the family services, education, advocacy and research for the more than 41,000 people diagnosed with HD in the United States. HDSA supports and participates in the HD Drug Research Pipeline, which develops potential therapies to treat and eventually cure HD; and HDSA also supports 50+ HDSA Centers of Excellence at major medical facilities throughout the US, where people with HD and their families receive comprehensive medical, psychological and social services, in addition to physical and occupational therapy and genetic testing and counseling. The Society comprises 50+ volunteer-led local chapters and affiliates across the country with its headquarters in New York City. Additionally, HDSA hosts more than 200 support groups for people with HD, their families, caregivers and people at-risk, and is a resource on HD for medical professionals and the general public.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Huntington's Disease Society of America

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Huntington's Disease Society of America claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In biology, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Huntington's Disease Society of America before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Huntington's Disease Society of America ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Huntington's Disease Society of America

In research
Huntington's Disease Society of America appears in biology research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Huntington's Disease Society of America in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Huntington's Disease Society of America is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 501(c)(3) organizations, Disability organizations based in the United States, Huntington's disease, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Huntington's Disease Society of America outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
