Anthropic

Anthropic is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Anthropic rather than just read about it. In short: Anthropic, PBC is an American artificial intelligence (AI) public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its flagship product is Claude, a series of proprietary large language models (LLMs).

Key takeaways

  • Anthropic belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Anthropic to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Anthropic from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Anthropic, PBC is an American artificial intelligence (AI) public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its flagship product is Claude, a series of proprietary large language models (LLMs). Anthropic was founded in 2021 with the goal of promoting AI safety by former members of OpenAI, including siblings Daniela Amodei and Dario Amodei, who are president and CEO, respectively. The company is privately held but reportedly plans an initial public offering in fall 2026. It was valued at US$965 billion in May 2026. Anthropic develops the LLM Claude in four tiers: Haiku, Sonnet, Opus, and Fable. The company provides access to the LLMs through an online chatbot (also named Claude) and an API, as well as multiple services based on the LLMs: Claude Code, Cowork, Design, and Science. Its most powerful model, Claude Mythos, is restricted to partnered US organizations, with a cybersecurity and life sciences focus. Anthropic's Project Panama, internally described as an "effort to destructively scan all the books in the world", provides training data for Claude. Before Project Panama, Anthropic downloaded pirated books and was sued, settling in 2025 a copyright infringement lawsuit from authors for $1.5 billion. Anthropic conducts LLM research including on mechanistic interpretability, safety, alignment, and societal impact. Notable researchers working at Anthropic include Andrej Karpathy, John Jumper, Jan Leike, Chris Olah and Amanda Askell. Anthropic partners with Palantir to provide Claude to US federal agencies including the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Intelligence Community; Claude was used in the 2026 Iran war and the 2026 United States intervention in Venezuela. In February 2026, the DoD demanded the ability to use Claude for all lawful purposes, but Anthropic refused to drop restrictions against mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. The dispute led the Trump administration to phase out Anthropic products from government use, a decision blocked by a preliminary injunction from a federal judge who called it "First Amendment retaliation". In February and June 2026, Anthropic accused Chinese competitors DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, MiniMax Group, and Alibaba Cloud of distilling Claude for their models.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Anthropic

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Anthropic claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Anthropic before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Anthropic ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Anthropic

In research
Anthropic appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Anthropic in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Anthropic is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 2021 establishments in California, Anthropic, Artificial intelligence companies, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Anthropic outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
