Journal of Differential Geometry

Journal of Differential Geometry is a mathematics topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Journal of Differential Geometry rather than just read about it. In short: The Journal of Differential Geometry is a peer-reviewed scientific journal of mathematics published by International Press on behalf of Lehigh University in 3 volumes of 3 issues each per year. The journal publishes an annual supplement in book form called Surveys in Differential Geometry.

Key takeaways

  • Journal of Differential Geometry belongs to mathematics; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Journal of Differential Geometry to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Journal of Differential Geometry from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Journal of Differential Geometry is a peer-reviewed scientific journal of mathematics published by International Press on behalf of Lehigh University in 3 volumes of 3 issues each per year. The journal publishes an annual supplement in book form called Surveys in Differential Geometry. It covers differential geometry and related subjects such as differential equations, mathematical physics, algebraic geometry, and geometric topology. The editor-in-chief is Shing-Tung Yau of Harvard University.

History The journal was established in 1967 by Chuan-Chih Hsiung, who was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Lehigh University at the time. Hsiung served as the journal's editor-in-chief, and later co-editor-in-chief, until his death in 2009. In May 1996, the annual Geometry and Topology conference which was held at Harvard University was dedicated to commemorating the 30th anniversary of the journal and the 80th birthday of its founder. Similarly, in May 2008 Harvard held a conference dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Journal of Differential Geometry.

Reception In his 2005 book Mathematical Publishing: A Guidebook, Steven Krantz writes: "At some very prestigious journals, like the Annals of Mathematics or the Journal of Differential Geometry, the editorial board meets every couple of months and debates each paper in detail." The journal is abstracted and indexed in MathSciNet, Zentralblatt MATH, Current Contents/Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences, and the Science Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor of 1.093.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Journal of Differential Geometry

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Journal of Differential Geometry claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In mathematics, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Journal of Differential Geometry before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Journal of Differential Geometry ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Journal of Differential Geometry

In research
Journal of Differential Geometry appears in mathematics research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Journal of Differential Geometry in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Journal of Differential Geometry is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 9 times per year journals, Academic journals associated with universities and colleges of the United States, Academic journals established in 1967, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Journal of Differential Geometry outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.

Frequently asked questions

What is Journal of Differential Geometry in simple terms?

The Journal of Differential Geometry is a peer-reviewed scientific journal of mathematics published by International Press on behalf of Lehigh University in 3 volumes of 3 issues each per year. The journal publishes an annual supplement in book form called Surveys in Differential Geometry.

Why does Journal of Differential Geometry matter?

Because it connects several mathematics ideas at once: it gives you a definition you can apply, a quantity you can calculate, and a way to check whether a result is plausible.

How should I study Journal of Differential Geometry?

Read the excerpt, restate it from memory, then work through the examples and applications listed on this page. The five-step study plan above takes about twenty minutes.
