Key takeaways

  • Juraj Hromkovič belongs to astronomy; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Juraj Hromkovič to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Juraj Hromkovič from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Juraj Hromkovič (born 1958) is a Slovak Computer Scientist and Professor at ETH Zürich. He is the author of numerous monographs and scientific publications in the field of algorithmics, computational complexity theory, and randomization.

Biography Hromkovič was born 1958 in Bratislava. He studied at Comenius University where he received his Ph.D. in 1986 (Dr. rer. nat.), habilitated in 1989, and worked as a lecturer from 1989 to 1990. From 1989 to 1994, he was a visiting professor at the group of Burkhard Monien at the University of Paderborn. In 1994, he received a professorship at the Institute of Informatics at the University of Kiel. From 1997 to 2003, he led the Chair of Computer Science 1 at RWTH Aachen. Since 2004, he has been a professor at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich for Information Technology and Education. Next to active research in various fields of theoretical computer science (about 170 publications), the main focus of his work lies on education for teachers of Computer Science and the illustration of basics of Computer Science to non-professionals.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Juraj Hromkovič

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Juraj Hromkovič claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In astronomy, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Juraj Hromkovič before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Juraj Hromkovič ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Juraj Hromkovič

In research
Juraj Hromkovič appears in astronomy research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Juraj Hromkovič in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Juraj Hromkovič is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1958 births, Academic staff of ETH Zurich, Academic staff of RWTH Aachen University, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Juraj Hromkovič outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
