Because of Kodiak Seamount's approach into the Aleutian Trench, it is literally cracking up under the stress. Although Kodiak is the oldest extant seamount in the Kodiak-Bowie chain, the adjacent lower slope contains transverse scars indicating earlier subduction of seamounts.
