Língua do Pê

Língua do Pê is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Língua do Pê rather than just read about it. In short: Língua dos Pês (Portuguese, P Language) is a language game spoken in Brazil and Portugal with Portuguese. It is also known in other languages, such as Dutch, Afrikaans, and Estonian.

Key takeaways

  • Língua do Pê belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Língua do Pê to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Língua do Pê from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Língua dos Pês (Portuguese, P Language) is a language game spoken in Brazil and Portugal with Portuguese. It is also known in other languages, such as Dutch, Afrikaans, and Estonian.

Function There are at least three different "dialects," or variations, of Língua do Pê.

"Double talk" dialect This "dialect" of Língua do Pê is just like the Jeringonza and the Idioma F language games in Spanish. It works by repeating the rime of each syllable, beginning it with p (pê in Portuguese). Examples:

você → vo-po-cê-pê gato → ga-pa-to-po menino → me-pe-ni-pi-no-po

Vowel-changing dialect This "dialect" is similar to the one described above, except for the addition of a vowel-changing rule. When an open syllable (one ending in a vowel) has [o] or [e] as its vowel, that vowel is changed to [ɔ] or [ɛ] respectively.

Example: [vɔˈpɔsɛˈpɛ korˈportouˈpou ɔˈpɔ seuˈpeu kaˈpabɛˈpɛlɔˈpɔ] Você cortou o seu cabelo? (Did you cut your hair?) Note that the added p-syllables are stressed, while the rest are not.

"Pê" dialect This "dialect" is more like Kongarian (a language game spoken with Hungarian) than the other "dialects" of Língua do Pê. To speak it, the syllable pê is inserted before every syllable. This is the variant most used in Brazilian Portuguese, while the others are more common in European Portuguese.

Example: pêLem pêBra pêCo pêMo pêE pêRa pêLe pêGal? Lembra como era legal? (Do you remember how cool it was?)

Dutch In the Netherlands and Belgium, the most common version is to insert the syllable "ep" before every vowel. Another version is to add the syllable "p" after every vowel and repeat that vowel.

Example: De boer woont op het platteland. (The farmer lives in the countryside.) Depe bepoer wepoont epop hepet plepattepelepand. Depe boepoer woopoont opop hepet plapattepelapand.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Língua do Pê

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Língua do Pê claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Língua do Pê before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Língua do Pê ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Língua do Pê

In research
Língua do Pê appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Língua do Pê in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Língua do Pê is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Brazilian games, Game stubs, Language games, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Língua do Pê outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
