Career

FTX Aschenbrenner joined the FTX Future Fund team in February 2022. The team was part of the FTX Foundation, the philanthropic arm of crypto exchange FTX, and provided grant funding for research topics that would "improve humanity's long-term prospects". Aschenbrenner resigned alongside other team members on 11 November 2022, the same day that FTX filed for bankruptcy.

OpenAI Aschenbrenner joined OpenAI in 2023, on a team called "Superalignment", headed by Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever. The team pursued technical breakthroughs to steer and control AI systems smarter than humans. As a member of the team, Aschenbrenner co-authored "Weak to Strong Generalization", which was presented at the 2024 International Conference on Machine Learning. Situational Awareness hedge fund After publishing "Situational Awareness" in 2024, Aschenbrenner founded Situational Awareness LP, a hedge fund backed by Patrick and John Collison, Daniel Gross, and Nat Friedman. Named after his essay "Situational Awareness", the AI-focused investment firm managed about $45 billion at its peak in July 2026. Aschenbrenner's investment firm suffered $35 billion in losses in July 2026, due to its use of leverage and sharp declines in AI infrastructure investments, while soliciting new funds from investors to cover losses. The Wall Street Journal and CNBC reported that the Situational Awareness fund was forced to sell all of its publicly traded stocks (which were purchased by Kenneth C. Personal life Aschenbrenner is married to Avital Balwit. Balwit was a fellow researcher at the Future of Humanity Institute and later joined Aschenbrenner as a member of FTX's Future Fund team. They resigned from FTX on the same day. Balwit later became the chief of staff to the CEO of Anthropic. The couple married in August 2026 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
