Liriodendron × sinoamericanum

Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Liriodendron × sinoamericanum rather than just read about it. In short: Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is an artificial hybrid of Liriodendron chinense and Liriodendron tulipifera in the family Magnoliaceae. Description Vegetative characteristics Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is a large, 30 m tall (or taller), deciduous tree with grey-brown bark.

Key takeaways

  • Liriodendron × sinoamericanum belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Liriodendron × sinoamericanum to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Liriodendron × sinoamericanum from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is an artificial hybrid of Liriodendron chinense and Liriodendron tulipifera in the family Magnoliaceae.

Description

Vegetative characteristics Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is a large, 30 m tall (or taller), deciduous tree with grey-brown bark. The leaf is 6–20 cm long, and 6–23 cm wide. The petiole is 5–18 cm long.

Generative characteristics The bisexual, cup-shaped, nectariferous flowers have nine tepals. The three outer tepals are green, while the inner six tepals are orange.

Cytology Tetraploid plants have been created.

Taxonomy It was described by Chih Bei Shang and Zhang Rong Wang based on previous work by Pei Chong Yieh in 2012. The type specimen was collected by Z. R.Wang. It was a cultivated tree in the campus of the Nanjing Forestry University.

Etymology The hybrid name sinoamericanum from sino- meaning Chinese and -americanum meaning American means chinese-american.

Conservation In China, Liriodendron × sinoamericanum may pose a threat to the endangered species Liriodendron chinense, due to hybridisation.

Cultivation It can be grown in well-drained soils, but it does not grow well in poorly drained soils. Due to heterosis, it grows more vigorously than the parent species. It is widely cultivated in China, but it hasn't been commercialised elsewhere.

Use It is suitable for producing paper and furniture.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Liriodendron × sinoamericanum

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Liriodendron × sinoamericanum claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Liriodendron × sinoamericanum before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Liriodendron × sinoamericanum ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Liriodendron × sinoamericanum

In research
Liriodendron × sinoamericanum appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Liriodendron × sinoamericanum in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Liriodendron × sinoamericanum is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Flora of China, Interspecific plant hybrids, Liriodendron, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Liriodendron × sinoamericanum outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
