Below is a list of European countries and dependencies by area in Europe. As a continent, Europe's total geographical area is about 10 million square kilometres. Transcontinental countries are ranked according to the size of their European part only. Inland water is included in area numbers.
Relative sizes European countries vary in area over many orders of magnitude, ranging from Russia which covers almost 4000000 km2 of territory within Europe, to Vatican City, which has a total area of less than 1 km2:

Definition Europe and Asia are contiguous with each other; thus, the exact boundary between them is not clearly defined, and often follows historical, political, and cultural definitions, rather than geographical.
