List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp)

List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) rather than just read about it. In short: This is a list of Jupiter trojans that lie in the Trojan camp, an elongated curved region around the trailing L5 Lagrangian point, 60° behind Jupiter in its orbit. All the asteroids at the trailing L5 point have names corresponding to participants on the Trojan side of the Trojan War, except for 617 Patroclus, which was named before this naming convention was instituted.

Key takeaways

  • List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

This is a list of Jupiter trojans that lie in the Trojan camp, an elongated curved region around the trailing L5 Lagrangian point, 60° behind Jupiter in its orbit. All the asteroids at the trailing L5 point have names corresponding to participants on the Trojan side of the Trojan War, except for 617 Patroclus, which was named before this naming convention was instituted. Correspondingly, 624 Hektor is a Trojan-named asteroid at the "Greek" (L4) Lagrangian point. In 2018, at its 30th General Assembly in Vienna, the International Astronomical Union amended this naming convention, allowing for Jupiter trojans with H larger than 12 (that is, a mean diameter smaller than approximately 22 kilometers, for an assumed albedo of 0.057) to be named after Olympic athletes, as the number of known Jupiter trojans, currently more than 10,000, far exceeds the number of available names of heroes from the Trojan War in Greek mythology. Trojans in the Greek and Trojan camp are discovered mainly in turns, because they are separated by 120°, and for a period of time one group of trojans will be behind the Sun, and the other will be visible.

Partial lists As of July 2024, there are 4951 known objects in the Trojan camp, of which 2643 are numbered and listed in the following partial lists:

Largest members This is a list of the largest 100+ Jupiter trojans of both the Trojan and Greek camps.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp)

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp)

In research
List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp), Lists of Jupiter trojans, Lists of asteroids, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for List of Jupiter trojans (Trojan camp) outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
