List of endangered invertebrates

List of endangered invertebrates is a biology topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand List of endangered invertebrates rather than just read about it. In short: In July 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 1163 endangered invertebrate species. Of all evaluated invertebrate species, 6.4% were listed as endangered.

Key takeaways

  • List of endangered invertebrates belongs to biology; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect List of endangered invertebrates to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of List of endangered invertebrates from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

In July 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 1163 endangered invertebrate species. Of all evaluated invertebrate species, 6.4% were listed as endangered. The IUCN also lists 36 invertebrate subspecies as endangered. No subpopulations of invertebrates have been evaluated by the IUCN. For a species to be considered endangered by the IUCN it must meet certain quantitative criteria which are designed to classify taxa facing "a very high risk of extinction". An even higher risk is faced by critically endangered species, which meet the quantitative criteria for endangered species. Critically endangered invertebrates are listed separately. There are 2150 invertebrate species which are endangered or critically endangered. Additionally 5278 invertebrate species (29% of those evaluated) are listed as data deficient, meaning there is insufficient information for a full assessment of conservation status. As these species typically have small distributions and/or populations, they are intrinsically likely to be threatened, according to the IUCN. While the category of data deficient indicates that no assessment of extinction risk has been made for the taxa, the IUCN notes that it may be appropriate to give them "the same degree of attention as threatened taxa, at least until their status can be assessed". This is a complete list of endangered invertebrate species and subspecies as evaluated by the IUCN.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with List of endangered invertebrates

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what List of endangered invertebrates claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In biology, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to List of endangered invertebrates before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about List of endangered invertebrates ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of List of endangered invertebrates

In research
List of endangered invertebrates appears in biology research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses List of endangered invertebrates in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
List of endangered invertebrates is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics IUCN Red List endangered species, Lists of invertebrates, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for List of endangered invertebrates outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
