Loch Arienas

Loch Arienas is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Loch Arienas rather than just read about it. In short: Loch Arienas is an extensive, lowland, freshwater loch on the Ardtornish Estate on the Morvern peninsula in the Scottish Highlands. It lies in a west-northwest to east-southeast direction, is approximately 3.2 km (2.0 mi) long and 1.21 km (0.75 mi) wide, and is at an altitude of 12 m (39 ft).

Key takeaways

  • Loch Arienas belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Loch Arienas to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Loch Arienas from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Loch Arienas is an extensive, lowland, freshwater loch on the Ardtornish Estate on the Morvern peninsula in the Scottish Highlands. It lies in a west-northwest to east-southeast direction, is approximately 3.2 km (2.0 mi) long and 1.21 km (0.75 mi) wide, and is at an altitude of 12 m (39 ft). The northern shore of the loch is mostly regular in shape, while the southern shore is irregular. Its average depth is 17.2 m (56 ft) and its maximum depth is 35 m (115 ft). The loch was surveyed on the 18 and 19 of August 1904 by John Hewitt as part of Sir John Murray's Bathymetrical Survey of Fresh-Water Lochs of Scotland 1897-1909. The loch holds native wild brown trout and permits are required to fish the loch. In the wood on the northern shore of the loch are the remains of charcoal burners’ huts and charcoal platforms. There is also a stone dyke dating from approximately 1780, which may have been used to enclose the wood to protect it from grazing animals.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Loch Arienas

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Loch Arienas claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Loch Arienas before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Loch Arienas ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Loch Arienas

In research
Loch Arienas appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Loch Arienas in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Loch Arienas is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Freshwater lochs of Scotland, Highlands, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Loch Arienas outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.

Frequently asked questions

What is Loch Arienas in simple terms?

Loch Arienas is an extensive, lowland, freshwater loch on the Ardtornish Estate on the Morvern peninsula in the Scottish Highlands. It lies in a west-northwest to east-southeast direction, is approximately 3.2 km (2.0 mi) long and 1.21 km (0.75 mi) wide, and is at an altitude of 12 m (39 ft).

Why does Loch Arienas matter?

Because it connects several science ideas at once: it gives you a definition you can apply, a quantity you can calculate, and a way to check whether a result is plausible.

How should I study Loch Arienas?

Read the excerpt, restate it from memory, then work through the examples and applications listed on this page. The five-step study plan above takes about twenty minutes.
