Logic learning machine

Logic learning machine is a computer science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Logic learning machine rather than just read about it. In short: Logic learning machine (LLM) is a machine learning method based on the generation of intelligible rules. LLM is an efficient implementation of the Switching Neural Network (SNN) paradigm, developed by Marco Muselli, Senior Researcher at the Italian National Research Council CNR-IEIIT in Genoa.

Key takeaways

  • Logic learning machine belongs to computer science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Logic learning machine to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Logic learning machine from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Logic learning machine (LLM) is a machine learning method based on the generation of intelligible rules. LLM is an efficient implementation of the Switching Neural Network (SNN) paradigm, developed by Marco Muselli, Senior Researcher at the Italian National Research Council CNR-IEIIT in Genoa. LLM has been employed in many different sectors, including the field of medicine (orthopedic patient classification, DNA micro-array analysis and Clinical Decision Support Systems), financial services and supply chain management.

History The Switching Neural Network approach was developed in the 1990s to overcome the drawbacks of the most commonly used machine learning methods. In particular, black box methods, such as multilayer perceptron and support vector machine, had good accuracy but could not provide deep insight into the studied phenomenon. On the other hand, decision trees were able to describe the phenomenon but often lacked accuracy. Switching Neural Networks made use of Boolean algebra to build sets of intelligible rules able to obtain very good performance. In 2014, an efficient version of Switching Neural Network was developed and implemented in the Rulex suite with the name Logic Learning Machine. Also, an LLM version devoted to regression problems was developed.

General Like other machine learning methods, LLM uses data to build a model able to perform a good forecast about future behaviors. LLM starts from a table including a target variable (output) and some inputs and generates a set of rules that return the output value y {\displaystyle y} corresponding to a given configuration of inputs. A rule is written in the form:

if premise then consequence where consequence contains the output value whereas premise includes one or more conditions on the inputs. According to the input type, conditions can have different forms:

for categorical variables the input value must be in a given subset: x 1 ∈ { A , B , C , . . . } {\displaystyle x_{1}\in \{A,B,C,...\}} . for ordered variables the condition is written as an inequality or an interval: x 2 ≤ α {\displaystyle x_{2}\leq \alpha } or β ≤ x 3 ≤ γ {\displaystyle \beta \leq x_{3}\leq \gamma }

A possible rule is therefore in the form

if x 1 ∈ { A , B , C , . . . } {\displaystyle x_{1}\in \{A,B,C,...\}} AND x 2 ≤ α {\displaystyle x_{2}\leq \alpha } AND β ≤ x 3 ≤ γ {\displaystyle \beta \leq x_{3}\leq \gamma } then y = y ¯ {\displaystyle y={\bar {y}}}

Types According to the output type, different versions of the Logic Learning Machine have been developed:

Logic Learning Machine for classification, when the output is a categorical variable, which can assume values in a finite set Logic Learning Machine for regression, when the output is an integer or real number.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Logic learning machine

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Logic learning machine claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In computer science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Logic learning machine before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Logic learning machine ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Logic learning machine

In research
Logic learning machine appears in computer science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Logic learning machine in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Logic learning machine is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Classification algorithms, Machine learning algorithms, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Logic learning machine outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.

  3. Compare your version with the excerpt and mark what you missed.
  4. Work through the three examples above with pen and paper.
  5. Explain Logic learning machine out loud to somebody else — or to Teacher Smith in the lgStudy chat.

Frequently asked questions

What is Logic learning machine in simple terms?

Logic learning machine (LLM) is a machine learning method based on the generation of intelligible rules. LLM is an efficient implementation of the Switching Neural Network (SNN) paradigm, developed by Marco Muselli, Senior Researcher at the Italian National Research Council CNR-IEIIT in Genoa.

Why does Logic learning machine matter?

Because it connects several computer science ideas at once: it gives you a definition you can apply, a quantity you can calculate, and a way to check whether a result is plausible.

How should I study Logic learning machine?

Read the excerpt, restate it from memory, then work through the examples and applications listed on this page. The five-step study plan above takes about twenty minutes.
