Born in Salem, Tamil Nadu, Chandrashekaran earned bachelor's and master's degrees in zoology at Presidency College, Chennai, and a PhD at the University of Madras. He served as a distinguished Reader in the School of Biological Sciences of Madurai Kamaraj University.
