McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses)

McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) rather than just read about it. In short: The McDonnell Farm is a 1943 oil painting by the American outsider painter Grandma Moses, produced at age 83 and signed "Moses". It has been in the collection of The Phillips Collection since 1944.

Key takeaways

  • McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The McDonnell Farm is a 1943 oil painting by the American outsider painter Grandma Moses, produced at age 83 and signed "Moses". It has been in the collection of The Phillips Collection since 1944. It shows the artist's impression of the song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", with the central white farmhouse on a hill overlooking the various barns that house the animals and farmhands working the fields. To the right is a haystack with children playing. This painting was one of forty selected for her to tell her story in her own words in the book Grandma Moses American Primitive: "Away back in 1840, the farms were large, and they had many hired men, to till the land, as they raised all of their food, such as wheat, corn, oats, rhy [sic] and buckwheat and lots of lifestock [sic], horses, cows, sheep, this called for woork [sic]. From the sheep, they spun the wool for yarn, to be woven in cloth for Blankets and Cloathing [sic]. They did ther [sic] own weaveing [sic]. Thir [sic] sweets was obtained from the bees and the maple trees, in the spring of the year. The Geese, turkeys, ducks, and hens, were the womens [sic] care, there was allwise [sic] a plenty of food, but no idle hands. It could well be called McDonell Farm, with a yuck-yuck here, ba-ba there, and a cluck-cluck everywhere...."

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses)

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses)

In research
McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1943 paintings, Farming in art, Oil paintings on panel, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for McDonnell Farm (Grandma Moses) outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
