Midnight breakfast

Midnight breakfast is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Midnight breakfast rather than just read about it. In short: Midnight breakfast is a generic term for a communal meal served at some American colleges and universities, often served during finals week. Culinary dishes that are generally considered breakfast foods are served in the school's dining hall late at night (hence "midnight") as a study break before or during final exams, or as a traditional community-building event.

Key takeaways

  • Midnight breakfast belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Midnight breakfast to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Midnight breakfast from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Midnight breakfast is a generic term for a communal meal served at some American colleges and universities, often served during finals week. Culinary dishes that are generally considered breakfast foods are served in the school's dining hall late at night (hence "midnight") as a study break before or during final exams, or as a traditional community-building event. Sometimes food is served by faculty and staff. Midnight breakfast is an occasional event and should not be confused with school dining facilities that operate 24 hours a day on a regular basis.

History The origins of the finals-week midnight breakfast tradition are unclear. The term was already used for campus social breakfast traditions by at least 1931, although those earlier events were not necessarily connected to final examinations. One of the earliest recorded instances of its modern use is in 1954, at the Georgia College & State University, in Milledgeville,Georgia. The modern form was established at several American colleges by the 1980s. Some institutions subsequently adopted the practice after learning of similar programs at other universities.

Selected examples At Swarthmore College, to mark the beginning of exam week, the meal is accompanied with the “Primal Scream” at the end of every semester during the last night of reading week. Students who are not able to go to the meal will still open their windows and scream as loudly as possible, regardless of location. At George Washington University, the event has sometimes attracted several thousand participants. The university reported approximately 2,500 students and 100 faculty and staff participants at its 2010 Midnight Breakfast.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Midnight breakfast

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Midnight breakfast claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Midnight breakfast before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Midnight breakfast ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Midnight breakfast

In research
Midnight breakfast appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Midnight breakfast in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Midnight breakfast is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Academic meals, Breakfast, Dining events, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Midnight breakfast outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
