Key takeaways

  • Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory, at 10 N. State in Mount Pleasant, Utah, was built in 1936-37 as a Works Progress Administration project. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is, in 2019, the Mount Pleasant Recreation Center. It is a PWA Moderne-style two-story, flat-roofed building. It was designed by Salt Lake City architect Niels P. Larsen, who also designed at least six other armories in Utah. Surviving, as of 1986, were the NRHP-listed Manti National Guard Armory and ones in Nephi, Fillmore, and Spanish Fork (the latter was NRHP-listed in 1986, but was delisted in 1996, presumably after being demolished); ones in Logan and Cedar City had been demolished. The main, south-facing, central facade of the building was transformed, by 2011, into a War memorial.

The building was described as:It consists of long rectangular block containing the principal entrance and flanking side wings. The front of the main block is broken up into three sections by low-relief pilasters. The center section has three recessed door panels and a slightly raised parapet which announces its importance. [This is the section which has been transformed into a war memorial.] The side wings have taller, stepped parapets and the ends are symmetrically pierced by vertical window panels. The structure is built of brick and has been plastered. It seems likely that the smooth plaster exterior is original. A compatibly styled garage addition was built at the northeast corner of the building.... It was built on land donated by the city. Also on the property was "a two story building which was constructed in 1879 to house the ZCMI branch store at Mt. Pleasant. Its second floor housed the county courthouse and the city council chambers. It also had a large hall for political rallies, plays, etc., so that the building for many years was the "amusement" and community center for the town." (Does that building still exist?)

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory

In research
Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Armories in Utah, Armories on the National Register of Historic Places, Buildings and structures completed in 1936, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Mount Pleasant National Guard Armory outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
