Key takeaways

  • Murdoch Children's Research Institute belongs to astronomy; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Murdoch Children's Research Institute to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Murdoch Children's Research Institute from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is an Australian paediatric medical research institute located in Melbourne, Victoria. It is affiliated with the Royal Children's Hospital and the University of Melbourne. The institute has five research themes: Stem Cell Medicine (Theme Director: Enzo Porello), Clinical Sciences (Theme Director: Vicki Anderson), Genomic Medicine (Theme Director: John Christodoulou, Infection, Immunity, and Global Health (Theme Director: Andrew Steer), and Population Health (Theme Director: Sharon Goldfeld ).

History The institute was established in 1986 by Professor David Danks and Professor Richard Cotton after media magnate Rupert Murdoch and his family donated A$5 million to the Birth Defects Research Institute at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne in 1984. The institute was later renamed the Murdoch Institute for Research into Birth Defects, and Rupert's mother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch became its patron. In 2000, the Murdoch Institute merged with the medical research institute of the Royal Children's Hospital to become the Murdoch Children's Research Institute.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Murdoch Children's Research Institute

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Murdoch Children's Research Institute claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In astronomy, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Murdoch Children's Research Institute before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Murdoch Children's Research Institute ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Murdoch Children's Research Institute

In research
Murdoch Children's Research Institute appears in astronomy research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Murdoch Children's Research Institute in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Murdoch Children's Research Institute is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1986 establishments in Australia, Medical research institutes in Melbourne, Murdoch family, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Murdoch Children's Research Institute outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
