Key takeaways

  • NASDAQ Biotechnology Index belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect NASDAQ Biotechnology Index to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of NASDAQ Biotechnology Index from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The NASDAQ Biotechnology Index is a stock market index made up of securities of NASDAQ-listed companies classified according to the Industry Classification Benchmark as either the Biotechnology or the Pharmaceutical industry. A list of the 225 components of the index is published online.

Criteria In order to remain included within the index, the components must meet the following criteria:

The security U.S. listing must be exclusively on the NASDAQ National Market (unless the security was dually listed on another U.S. market prior to January 1, 2004 and has continuously maintained such listing). The issuer of the security must be classified according to the Industry Classification Benchmark as either Biotechnology or Pharmaceuticals. The security may not be issued by an issuer currently in bankruptcy proceedings. The security must have a market capitalization of at least $200 million. The security must have an average daily trading volume of at least 100,000 shares. The issuer of the security may not have entered into a definitive agreement or other arrangement which would likely result in the security no longer being Index. The issuer of the security may not have annual financial statements with an audit opinion that is currently withdrawn. The issuer of the security must have "seasoned" on NASDAQ or another recognized market for at least 6 months; in the case of spin-offs, the operating history of the spin-off will be considered.

Investing in the index This index is tracked by several exchange-traded funds, the most liquid of which is the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology (Nasdaq: IBB).

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with NASDAQ Biotechnology Index

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what NASDAQ Biotechnology Index claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to NASDAQ Biotechnology Index before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about NASDAQ Biotechnology Index ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of NASDAQ Biotechnology Index

In research
NASDAQ Biotechnology Index appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses NASDAQ Biotechnology Index in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
NASDAQ Biotechnology Index is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics American stock market indices, Biotechnology in the United States, Nasdaq, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for NASDAQ Biotechnology Index outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
