Negativibacillus is a genus of strictly anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, spore-forming, non-motile, rod-shaped bacteria in the phylum Bacillota. The type species and only species with a validly published name is Negativibacillus massiliensis.
Description The type strain of N. massiliensis, Marseille-P3213, was isolated from a human left-colon sample. Its cells are approximately 0.5–0.8 μm wide and 3.0–4.5 μm long. The bacterium grows under strictly anaerobic conditions, with optimal growth at 37 °C, and is catalase- and oxidase-negative. The genome of the type strain is approximately 2.88 million base pairs long and has a G+C content of approximately 45.4%. The strain is deposited in culture collections as CSUR P3213 and DSM 103594.
Taxonomy The generic name combines the Latin negativus, meaning negative, and bacillus, meaning a small rod, referring to the Gram-stain-negative appearance and rod-shaped cells of the type species. The specific epithet massiliensis refers to Massilia, the Roman name for Marseille. The original description assigned the genus to the family Ruminococcaceae. LPSN currently treats Negativibacillus as unassigned to a family within Bacillota.
