Newberry Plaza

Newberry Plaza is a engineering topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Newberry Plaza rather than just read about it. In short: Newberry Plaza is a 553-foot (169 m) full amenity luxury skyscraper located in the heart of the affluent Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was named after the Newberry Library that once operated at its location.

Key takeaways

  • Newberry Plaza belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Newberry Plaza to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Newberry Plaza from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Newberry Plaza is a 553-foot (169 m) full amenity luxury skyscraper located in the heart of the affluent Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was named after the Newberry Library that once operated at its location. The complex was completed in 1973 and has 57 floors above ground. Gordon and Levin designed the building, which is the 56th tallest in Chicago. When Newberry Plaza was completed it was the sixth-tallest all-residential skyscraper in the world and the first highrise in the city to have townhomes built on top of a building's pedestal, known as the Skyhomes. The property also contains commercial space under the condominium tower (1050 N State). Former famous businesses include the original location of Morton's The Steakhouse, the opulent restaurant Arnie's, exclusive nightclub Zorine's, both also owned by the Morton family, the Grotto, and Trader Vic's. In addition to its astonishing views of the city, it might be best known for its prominent location as the only residential high-rise building in a well known triangle of high end restaurants on the East and Oak Street on the South.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Newberry Plaza

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Newberry Plaza claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Newberry Plaza before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Newberry Plaza ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Newberry Plaza

In research
Newberry Plaza appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Newberry Plaza in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Newberry Plaza is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1974 establishments in Illinois, Buildings and structures completed in 1974, Chicago building and structure stubs, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Newberry Plaza outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
