Nyström method

Nyström method is a mathematics topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Nyström method rather than just read about it. In short: In mathematics numerical analysis, the Nyström method or quadrature method seeks the numerical solution of an integral equation by replacing the integral with a representative weighted sum. The continuous problem is broken into n {\displaystyle n} discrete intervals; quadrature or numerical integration determines the weights and locations of representative points for the integral.

Key takeaways

  • Nyström method belongs to mathematics; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Nyström method to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Nyström method from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

In mathematics numerical analysis, the Nyström method or quadrature method seeks the numerical solution of an integral equation by replacing the integral with a representative weighted sum. The continuous problem is broken into n {\displaystyle n} discrete intervals; quadrature or numerical integration determines the weights and locations of representative points for the integral. The problem becomes a system of linear equations with n {\displaystyle n} equations and n {\displaystyle n} unknowns, and the underlying function is implicitly represented by an interpolation using the chosen quadrature rule. This discrete problem may be ill-conditioned, depending on the original problem and the chosen quadrature rule. Since the linear equations require O ( n 3 ) {\displaystyle O(n^{3})} operations to solve (with default methods such as Gaussian elimination), high-order quadrature rules perform better because low-order quadrature rules require large n {\displaystyle n} for a given accuracy. Gaussian quadrature is normally a good choice for smooth, non-singular problems.

Discretization of the integral Standard quadrature methods seek to represent an integral as a weighed sum in the following manner:

∫ a b h ( x ) d x ≈ ∑ k = 1 n w k h ( x k ) {\displaystyle \int _{a}^{b}h(x)\;\mathrm {d} x\approx \sum _{k=1}^{n}w_{k}h(x_{k})}

where w k {\displaystyle w_{k}} are the weights of the quadrature rule, and points x k {\displaystyle x_{k}} are the abscissas.

Example Applying this to the inhomogeneous Fredholm equation of the second kind

f ( x ) = λ u ( x ) − ∫ a b K ( x , x ′ ) f ( x ′ ) d x ′ {\displaystyle f(x)=\lambda u(x)-\int _{a}^{b}K(x,x')f(x')\;\mathrm {d} x'} , results in

f ( x ) ≈ λ u ( x ) − ∑ k = 1 n w k K ( x , x k ) f ( x k ) {\displaystyle f(x)\approx \lambda u(x)-\sum _{k=1}^{n}w_{k}K(x,x_{k})f(x_{k})} .

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Nyström method

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Nyström method claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In mathematics, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Nyström method before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Nyström method ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Nyström method

In research
Nyström method appears in mathematics research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Nyström method in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Nyström method is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Integral equations, Numerical analysis, Numerical integration, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Nyström method outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
