Reference excerpt

The Old Blue Coat School is a building in the city centre of Coventry, England. It was built in 1856 on the site of the Priory of St Mary, and is currently used by the Holy Trinity Church.

History The Blue Coat School was founded in the early 18th century to provide housing, food and education for girls in Coventry until they were 16 years old. It originally occupied the north-west tower of the Priory of St Mary, the only part to survive the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The school buildings were extended and modified through the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but were in poor condition when a major rebuilding took place in 1856–7. The building as it stands today was designed by James Murray in a Gothic style to resemble a French château. The school occupied the building until 1964 when it moved to a new site in Terry Road, Coventry. The building lay empty and fell into disrepair until 2000, when it was renovated for use by the nearby Holy Trinity Church. The building was Grade II* listed on 5 February 1955, for reasons of architectural interest, historical interest and group value with the other buildings on the site of the old priory.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Old Blue Coat School, Coventry

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Old Blue Coat School, Coventry claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Old Blue Coat School, Coventry before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Old Blue Coat School, Coventry ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Old Blue Coat School, Coventry

In research
Old Blue Coat School, Coventry appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Old Blue Coat School, Coventry in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Old Blue Coat School, Coventry is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures completed in 1857, Buildings and structures in Coventry, Grade II* listed buildings in the West Midlands (county), so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Old Blue Coat School, Coventry outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
