Reference excerpt

Oratory of Saint Stephen (Italian: Oratorio di Santo Stefano is a Roman Catholic oratory in the town of Lentate sul Seveso, in the Province of Monza and Brianza and the region of Lombardy, Italy.

History The plain Gothic-style brick two-story structure is located in the town center, next to the parish church of San Vito Martire. Construction took place in 1369, commissioned by Stefano Porro, an ambassador to the court of Bernabò and Galeazzo Visconti, who was made a palatine count by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1368. The outside appears dilapidated. The entrance to the single nave is through a stairwell dipping below the right of the façade, above is a mullioned window with an ogival window frame. Despite restoration in the 1930s and 1960s, the frescoes are threatened by humidity.

Interior Decoration The interior walls of the church contain frescos by Anovelo da Imbonate who also painted the image above the front portal. Imbonate is a painter of the school of Giovanni da Milano who was a direct disciple of Giotto. The three walls around the oratory is covered with the cycle of frescoes of the life of Saint Stephen. Among other frescoes is the work by an anonymous painter called the "Maestro di Lentate". This is representative of a late-Gothic art school called the International Gothic style.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso

In research
Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 14th-century Roman Catholic church buildings in Italy, Buildings and structures completed in 1369, Churches completed in the 1360s, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Oratory of Santo Stefano, Lentate sul Seveso outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
