The Our Lady of Mercy monument (Polish: Monument Matki Bożej Miłosiernej) in Konotopie, Poland, is a monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the Marian title Our Lady of Mercy. It is the tallest statue of Mary in Europe and tallest statue of any kind in the European Union.

History Businessman Roman Karkosik and his wife Grażyna commissioned the creation of a monument dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus in the town of Konotopie, Poland. The Konotopie local government has been aware of plans for the statue as early as 2023. The ceremonial laying of the foundation was held on 12 March 2025 within the vicinity of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows. The monument dedicated to Mary, under the title "Our Lady of Mercy" was consecrated on 15 August 2026. It was blessed by Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski. At the time of its completion, it is noted for being the tallest Marian statue in Europe.

Design Adam Jakub Matejkowski was the sculptor of the Our Lady of Mercy monument. He asked his students Krzysztof Skóra and Marek Purs to collaborate on him on the project. Matejkowski said he based the facial features of the statue on his wife and the expression on his 11-year-old daughter. It depicts the Virgin Mary standing with her gaze directed downward and her arms slightly outstretched in an inviting gesture. It is the tallest statue of Mary in Europe at 55.6 meters (182 ft). The height includes a crown-shaped 15-meter (49 ft) pedestal. The Mother of All Asia – Tower of Peace in the Philippines is still the tallest Marian statue in the world at 98 meters (322 ft).

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie

In research
Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Colossal statues, Monuments and memorials in Poland, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Our Lady of Mercy monument, Konotopie outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
