Pacific Northwest water resource region

Pacific Northwest water resource region is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Pacific Northwest water resource region rather than just read about it. In short: The Pacific Northwest water resource region is one of 21 major geographic areas, or regions, in the first level of classification used by the United States Geological Survey to divide and sub-divide the United States into successively smaller hydrologic units. These geographic areas contain either the drainage area of a major river, or the combined drainage areas of a series of rivers.

Key takeaways

  • Pacific Northwest water resource region belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Pacific Northwest water resource region to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Pacific Northwest water resource region from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Pacific Northwest water resource region is one of 21 major geographic areas, or regions, in the first level of classification used by the United States Geological Survey to divide and sub-divide the United States into successively smaller hydrologic units. These geographic areas contain either the drainage area of a major river, or the combined drainage areas of a series of rivers. The Pacific Northwest region, which is listed with a 2-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC) of 17, has an approximate size of 302,334 square miles (783,040 square kilometers), and consists of 12 subregions, which are listed with the 4-digit HUCs 1701 through 1706. This region includes the drainage within the United States that ultimately discharges into: (a) the Strait of Georgia and of Strait of Juan de Fuca, and (b) the Pacific Ocean within the states of Oregon and Washington; and that part of the Great Basin whose discharge is into the state of Oregon. Includes all of Washington and parts of California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Pacific Northwest water resource region

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Pacific Northwest water resource region claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Pacific Northwest water resource region before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Pacific Northwest water resource region ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Pacific Northwest water resource region

In research
Pacific Northwest water resource region appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Pacific Northwest water resource region in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Pacific Northwest water resource region is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Drainage basins, Lists of drainage basins, Lists of rivers of the United States by state, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Pacific Northwest water resource region outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
