Key takeaways

  • Parliament building of Åland belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Parliament building of Åland to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Parliament building of Åland from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Autonomy Building (Swedish: Självstyrelsegården) is the seat of the Parliament of Åland. It is located in Mariehamn, the capital of Åland.

History The Autonomy Building was designed by the Finnish architect Helmer Stenros, who won the Nordic architectural competition for Åland’s administrative and cultural center in Mariehamn. The buildings are part of Project 77, which also included the construction of the Åland Museum and Hotel Arkipelag. It was completed in 1978. The Society House in Mariehamn, which was demolished in 1975, formerly stood on the site.

Architecture and features The interior was largely planned by designer Pirkko Stenros and features period-typical furniture designed by architects such as Yrjö Kukkapuro and Alvar Aalto. The building is approximately 17,000 cubic metres (600,000 cu ft) and consists of two different parts. The Parliament House contains the plenary hall, committee rooms, the Parliament's office, Parliament's library, and meeting rooms. The plenary hall was originally meant for congresses, but with the construction of the Alandica Culture and Congress building the plenary hall is reserved for the Parliament.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Parliament building of Åland

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Parliament building of Åland claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Parliament building of Åland before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Parliament building of Åland ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Parliament building of Åland

In research
Parliament building of Åland appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Parliament building of Åland in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Parliament building of Åland is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures completed in 1978, Buildings and structures in Åland, Legislative buildings, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Parliament building of Åland outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
