  • Reproduce the core statement of Pillow lavas, Maradihalli from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Pillow lavas at Maradihalli is a geological formation in Chitradurga district of the Indian state of Karnataka. It was notified as a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India in 1975.

Geography The Maradihalli Hills form part of the Chitradurga greenstone belt, which represents a former submarine basin. It is located in Chitradurga district, Karnataka. The geological site, spread over 2.5 acres (1.0 ha), was notified as a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India in 1975.

Geology

The Maradihalli pillow lavas occur within the Chitradurga schist belt of the Dharwar Group. Dating to about 2.5 billion years, it provides evidence for understanding the evolution of Precambrian peninsular India. The Chitradurga schist belt is bounded on both sides by older gneissic rocks, about three billion years old. The basaltic lavas are found on a small, elongated rocky mound, with a massive core surrounded by lava pillows along its crest and sides. Pillow lavas are volcanic rocks formed when hot molten lava erupts underwater. On coming into contact with cold water, the lava cools rapidly and breaks into rounded or roughly spherical bodies called pillows. These pillows generally have flat bottoms and rounded tops. Their shape and arrangement are useful for determining the order of rock layers in deformed geological formations. The pillow lavas measure up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in diameter and consist of radial fractures measuring 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in).

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Pillow lavas, Maradihalli

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Pillow lavas, Maradihalli claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In earth science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Pillow lavas, Maradihalli before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Pillow lavas, Maradihalli ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Pillow lavas, Maradihalli

In research
Pillow lavas, Maradihalli appears in earth science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Pillow lavas, Maradihalli in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Pillow lavas, Maradihalli is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Chitradurga district, National Geological Monuments in India, Volcanology, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Pillow lavas, Maradihalli outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
