Synthesis The salt was reported in 1800's, but early preparations started with Cr(III) salts, which are poor precursors. It is readily prepared by cyanation of chromium(II) compounds, such as chromous acetate, followed by an oxidation step:</sup

[Cr2(OAc)4] + 12 KCN → 2 K4[Cr(CN)6] + 4 KOAc (OAc- = acetate) 4 K4[Cr(CN)6] + O2 + 2 H2O → 4 K3[Cr(CN)6] + 4 KOH The procedure exploits the lability of Cr(II) salts and their easy oxidation to give the exchange-inert Cr(III) derivative.
