Life Lan earned a M.D. from the Weifang Medical University in 1985. In 2001, she completed a Ph.D. in molecular epidemiology at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, as part of a joint training program with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Lan earned a M.P.H. at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Lan was awarded National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientific tenure in 2008.
