Selenanthrene is an organoselenium compound with the formula (C6H4)2Se2. It consists of a pair of benzene rings linked by a pair of selenium atoms. It is analogous to thianthrene, (C6H4)2S2. It adopts a folded shape owing to the C-Se-C angles of 97°, with the central six-atom ring having a conformation comparable to a cyclohexane chair. Oxidation of selenanthrene gives selenoxides, which are reagents for the dehydrogenation of alkenes.
