Shelton Vineyards

Shelton Vineyards is a engineering topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Shelton Vineyards rather than just read about it. In short: Shelton Vineyards is a vineyard located in Dobson, North Carolina. Of over 95 North Carolina wineries, Shelton Vineyards is the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina.

Key takeaways

  • Shelton Vineyards belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Shelton Vineyards to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Shelton Vineyards from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Located in the Yadkin Valley near Mount Airy, the estate is 406-acre (1.64 km2) acres. The Shelton Vineyards' wines are reflective of the terroir of the Yadkin Valley.

History Shelton Vineyards is located in Dobson, North Carolina It took its present form for the first time in 1994, when Charlie and Ed Shelton bought the property that is just a few miles from where the two brothers grew up. They have a 33,000-square-foot (3,100 m2) winery building and approximately 200-acre (0.81 km2) acres of vines are planted in the vineyard. Located in the Yadkin Valley AVA, the vineyard shares a similar climate and growing season to several wine growing regions in Europe. In 2002, they asked the BATF to name the Yadkin Valley as an American Viticultural Area. In 2003, it received final ATF approval, becoming the first AVA in North Carolina.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Shelton Vineyards

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Shelton Vineyards claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Shelton Vineyards before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Shelton Vineyards ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Shelton Vineyards

In research
Shelton Vineyards appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Shelton Vineyards in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Shelton Vineyards is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures in Surry County, North Carolina, Tourist attractions in Surry County, North Carolina, Vineyards, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Shelton Vineyards outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
