Key takeaways

  • Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial (Polish: Pomnik Sokratesa Starynkiewicza) is a monument in Warsaw, Poland, located in the district of Ochota, in the Water Filters complex, near 81 Koszykowa Street. It consists of a bust depicting Sokrates Starynkiewicz, a 19th-century military officer and statesman, who was the mayor of Warsaw from 1875 to 1892. It was originally designed by Jan Woydyga, and unveiled in 1907. It was destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War, and its replica was unveiled in 1996.

History The monument was proposed in 1903 by the inhabitants of Warsaw. It was designed by sculptor Jan Woydyga, and unveiled in 1907, at the Warsaw Water Filters, which were opened while he was in office of the city mayor. The bust was destroyed by German soldiers in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising in the Second World War. Its replica, designed by K. Michalski, was unveiled in 1996, and placed on the original pedestal.

Characteristics The monument is placed next to the north side of the water tower, in the Warsaw Water Filters complex, near 81 Koszykowa Street. It consists of a bust of Sokrates Starynkiewicz, placed on a pedestal made from pink granite. Its base is decorated with a sculpture of laurel wreath wrapped around it, which is made from brass. It has the total height of 3 m.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial

In research
Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1907 establishments in Poland, 1907 sculptures, 1944 disestablishments in Poland, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Sokrates Starynkiewicz Memorial outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
