Two parasite species were named in his honor: Bilorchis dissanaikei, a trematode, and Plasmodium dissanaikei, a malarial parasite of parakeets, the latter discovered by one of his former students in London.

Early life and education Stanley Dissanaike was born on 29 October 1925 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He received his early education at Richmond College, Galle, and St. Peter's College, Colombo. He later attended the University of Ceylon, where he earned a BSc in Zoology with first-class honors, specializing in parasitology. He pursued further studies in medicine, graduating with distinction and receiving several first-class honors and medals from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ceylon. In 1954, he completed his PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, under the supervision of Professor Cyril Garnham, FRS.
