Stefan Karol Estreicher

Stefan Karol Estreicher is a physics topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Stefan Karol Estreicher rather than just read about it. In short: Stefan Karol Estreicher is a theoretical physicist, currently serving as Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Physics Department of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Education He received his PhD from the University of Zurich in 1982 and joined the faculty of Texas Tech University in 1986.

Key takeaways

  • Stefan Karol Estreicher belongs to physics; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Stefan Karol Estreicher to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Stefan Karol Estreicher from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Stefan Karol Estreicher is a theoretical physicist, currently serving as Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Physics Department of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

Education He received his PhD from the University of Zurich in 1982 and joined the faculty of Texas Tech University in 1986.

Academic Work He was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1997 and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK) in 2006. He won the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel research award from the Alexander von Humboldt Society in 2001. He served for 6 years as the Chair of the International Steering Committee of the ICDS conferences series and, also for 6 years, as the elected Spokesperson of the P.W. Horn Distinguished Professors at Texas Tech University. He has published over 200 scientific papers dealing with the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of defects in semiconductors. His studies of vibrational lifetimes revealed the concept of phonon trapping which provides a natural explanation for why and how defects reduce heat flow. He was the first to calculate from first-principles the Kapitza resistance and its temperature dependence at a semiconductor interface. He also published several articles on the history of wine and viticulture.

Family He is the son of Zygmunt Estreicher (professor of musicology), grandson of Tadeusz Estreicher (professor of chemistry and historian), great-grandson of Karol Estreicher senior (author of Bibliografia Polska), nephew of Karol Estreicher junior, and grand-nephew of Stanisław Estreicher.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Stefan Karol Estreicher

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Stefan Karol Estreicher claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In physics, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Stefan Karol Estreicher before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Stefan Karol Estreicher ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Stefan Karol Estreicher

In research
Stefan Karol Estreicher appears in physics research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Stefan Karol Estreicher in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Stefan Karol Estreicher is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics 1952 births, American physicists, Living people, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Stefan Karol Estreicher outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
