Succinivibrio is a genus of Gram-negative, anaerobic, curved or helical rod-shaped bacteria in the family Succinivibrionaceae. The type species, Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens, was originally isolated from the rumen of cattle.
Taxonomy Succinivibrio is the type genus of the family Succinivibrionaceae. Its name combines a reference to succinic acid with the Neo-Latin term vibrio, referring to a curved, motile bacterial cell. LPSN recognizes two species with validly published and correct names.
Characteristics S. dextrinosolvens ferments glucose to products including succinate, acetate, and lactate. The proportions of these fermentation products vary with growth rate and culture conditions. Carbon dioxide can be incorporated into metabolic intermediates during succinate formation. S. faecicola is an obligately anaerobic, non-motile, and non-spore-forming helical rod. Its type strain was isolated from cow feces. It ferments glucose, maltose, xylose, and arabinose, with succinate as the principal product of glucose fermentation.
