Successive catalytic reduction and saponification affords amino alcohol 4. Oxidation of the sulfide to the sulfoxide with a reagent such as metaperiodate gives sulfinalol (5). The methyl group on a sulfoxide is sufficiently acidic to substitute for phenolic hydroxyl.
