Key takeaways

  • Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) belongs to engineering; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

The Sun Yat-sen or Zhongshan Memorial Hall is an octagon-shaped building in Guangzhou, capital of China's Guangdong Province. The hall was designed by Lu Yanzhi and was built with funds raised by local and overseas Chinese people in memory of Sun Yat-sen. Construction work commenced in 1929 and completed in 1931. The hall is a large octagonal structure with a span of 71 metres (233 ft) without pillars, housing a large stage and seats 3,240 people.

History The memorial hall stands on the site of Guangzhou's Presidential Palace during the Constitutional Protection Movement, when the Nationalists operated a rival "Chinese" government to the Zhili Clique's Beijing regime. The palace was damaged during Ye Ju's 16 June 1922 attack on Sun Yat-sen, during which—though he had already fled—his wife narrowly escaped shelling and rifle fire before meeting him on the gunboat Yongfeng, where they were joined by Chiang Kai-shek. The hall itself has been severely damaged and repaired several times until 1998, when it was comprehensively upgraded to its present-day condition. A statue of Sun Yat-sen was erected in front of the main entrance.

Transportation The memorial hall is accessible from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station of Guangzhou Metro.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou)

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In engineering, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou)

In research
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) appears in engineering research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Buildings and structures completed in 1931, Chinese building and structure stubs, Major National Historical and Cultural Sites in Guangdong, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Guangzhou) outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
