Sydowia (journal)

Sydowia (journal) is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Sydowia (journal) rather than just read about it. In short: Sydowia is a biannual peer-reviewed scientific journal covering the study of fungi, including their taxonomy, systematics, evolution, structure, development, ecology, pathology in plants, animals, and humans, and biotechnological applications. It is published by Verlag Ferdinand Berger & Söhne.

Key takeaways

  • Sydowia (journal) belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Sydowia (journal) to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Sydowia (journal) from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Sydowia is a biannual peer-reviewed scientific journal covering the study of fungi, including their taxonomy, systematics, evolution, structure, development, ecology, pathology in plants, animals, and humans, and biotechnological applications. It is published by Verlag Ferdinand Berger & Söhne. Its editor in chief is Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber.

History The journal was originally established in 1903 under the title Annales Mycologici by founding editor Hans Sydow. It was continued as Annales mycologici, series II and retitled with the prefix Sydowia in Sydow's honour following his death in 1946. Sydowia was edited by Franz Petrak from 1947 until his death in 1973. Egon Horak succeeded him until 1989. Orlando Petrini took over from 1989 to 1996 and Liliane Petrini until 2004. Sydowia was published bimonthly from 1947 and biannually since 1992. Now published in English, earlier volumes included papers in English, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. Volumes since 2012 are available online. Volumes 1 to 30 are freely available online.

Abstracting and indexing The journal is abstracted and indexed in:

Scopus Science Citation Index Expanded CAB Abstracts Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor of 0.213.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Sydowia (journal)

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Sydowia (journal) claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Sydowia (journal) before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Sydowia (journal) ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Sydowia (journal)

In research
Sydowia (journal) appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Sydowia (journal) in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Sydowia (journal) is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Biannual journals, English-language journals, Mycology journals, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Sydowia (journal) outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
