TIPA (short for "TeX IPA" or "Tokyo IPA") is a free software package created in 2002 that provides International Phonetic Alphabet and other phonetic character capabilities for TeX and LaTeX. Written by Rei Fukui (福井玲, Fukui Rei), TIPA is the successor to the earlier TSIPA package written by Fukui and his collaborators Kobayashi Hajime and Shirakawa Shun. In 2018, the TeX TIPA Roman font was selected as best representing the IPA symbol set by the International Phonetic Association's Alphabet, Charts and Fonts committee. By default, TIPA is included in the MiKTeX and TeX Live distributions of LaTeX. TIPA characters may be placed in the main text environment of a LaTeX document, or by declaring an IPA environment using any of the following methods: \textipa{...}, {\tipaencoding ...}, {\tipasafemode ...}, or \begin{IPA} ... \end{IPA}. TIPA supports many of the symbols in the Phonetic Symbol Guide (though macros are sometimes required) as well as a few idiosyncratic ones, such as a l–ɾ ligature 𝼑. TIPA also supports characters from the Extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet, which can be accessed by adding \usepackage[extra]{tipa} to the preamble of a LaTeX document.
