Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide

Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide is a chemistry topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide rather than just read about it. In short: tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) is the organic compound with the formula (CH3)3COOH. It is one of the most widely used hydroperoxides in a variety of oxidation processes, like the Halcon process.

Key takeaways

  • Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide belongs to chemistry; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) is the organic compound with the formula (CH3)3COOH. It is one of the most widely used hydroperoxides in a variety of oxidation processes, like the Halcon process. It is normally supplied as a 69–70% aqueous solution. Compared to hydrogen peroxide and organic peracids, tert-butyl hydroperoxide is less reactive and more soluble in organic solvents. Overall, it is renowned for the convenient handling properties of its solutions. Its solutions in organic solvents are highly stable.

Application Industrially, tert-butyl hydroperoxide is used to prepare propylene oxide. In the Halcon process, molybdenum-based catalysts are used for this reaction:

(CH3)3COOH + CH2=CHCH3 → (CH3)3COH + CH2OCHCH3 The byproduct t-butanol can be dehydrated to isobutene and converted to MTBE. On a much smaller scale, tert-butyl hydroperoxide is used to produce some fine chemicals by the Sharpless epoxidation.

Synthesis and production Many synthetic routes are available, e.g. by the auto-oxidation of isobutane.

Safety tert-butyl hydroperoxide is potentially dangerous, but explosions are rare. A solution of tert-butyl hydroperoxide and water with a concentration of greater than 90% is forbidden to be shipped according to US Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Table 49 CFR 172.101. In some sources it also has an NFPA 704 rating of 4 for health, 4 for flammability, 4 for reactivity and is a potent oxidant, however another source claims a lower rating of 1-4-4.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In chemistry, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide

In research
Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide appears in chemistry research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Hydroperoxides, Oxidizing agents, Reagents for organic chemistry, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Tert-Butyl hydroperoxide outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
