Tetramethylammonium sulfate

Tetramethylammonium sulfate is a science topic covered in the lgStudy science library. This page brings together a partial reference excerpt, illustrations, worked examples, real-world applications and a short study plan, so you can understand Tetramethylammonium sulfate rather than just read about it. In short: Tetramethylammonium sulfate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula [N(CH3)4]2SO4. It is a white hygroscopic crystalline powder.

Key takeaways

  • Tetramethylammonium sulfate belongs to science; place it in that map before memorising details.
  • Learn the definition first, then one example that makes the definition concrete.
  • Connect Tetramethylammonium sulfate to a quantity you can measure, compute or draw — that is where exam questions come from.
  • Reproduce the core statement of Tetramethylammonium sulfate from memory before moving on to harder problems.

Reference excerpt

Tetramethylammonium sulfate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula [N(CH3)4]2SO4. It is a white hygroscopic crystalline powder. It is a quaternary ammonium salt. It consists of tetramethylammonium cations [N(CH3)4]+ and sulfate anions SO2−4. It forms the tetrahydrate [N(CH3)4]2SO4·4H2O.

Structure Tetramethylammonium sulfate tetrahydrate is orthorhombic, with a space group of Pnam, with the lattice constants a = 15.438 Å, b = 13.832 Å, c = 7.923 Å at −26 °C (−15 °F). The crystal structure contains ordered tetramethylammonium cations in channels formed by hydrogen‐bonded chains of water molecules cross linked by interaction with the sulfate anions which are disordered.

Synthesis Tetramethylammonium sulfate can be synthesized by the reaction between tetramethylammonium hydroxide and sulfuric acid, followed by careful evaporation and crystallization.

2 [N(CH3)4]OH + H2SO4 → [N(CH3)4]2SO4 + 2 H2O

Uses Tetramethylammonium sulfate is used as a phase transfer catalyst and in organic synthesis. It exhibits properties typical of quaternary ammonium compounds, such as being a surfactant and having antimicrobial activity. Zinc metal is considered as a promising metal anode for aqueous rechargeable metal ion batteries due to its low electrochemical potential and high theoretical capacity. However, zinc metal suffers from hydrogen evolution reaction and dendrite growth during plating and stripping. A low-cost, effective and non-toxic electrolyte additive, tetramethylammonium sulfate, as a simple cationic surfactant additive for zinc-ion batteries is proposed, to trigger the smooth zinc deposition during battery charging and discharging. It is found that tetramethylammonium sulfate enables the deposition of zinc cations (Zn2+) along the surface of zinc foil laterally without stacking and thus dendrite growth and side reactions are greatly avoided by the electrolyte additive of tetramethylammonium sulfate.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a first encounter with Tetramethylammonium sulfate

Start with the simplest possible case. Write down what Tetramethylammonium sulfate claims or describes in one sentence, then invent the smallest concrete situation in which that sentence is true. In science, the smallest case is usually a single object, a single equation or a single measurement. Check that every symbol or term in your sentence has a meaning in that case.

Example 2 — changing one variable

Take the situation from Example 1 and change exactly one quantity: double it, halve it, or set it to zero. Predict what should happen to Tetramethylammonium sulfate before you calculate. Comparing your prediction with the result is the fastest way to find out whether you understand the idea or only the words.

Example 3 — an exam-style question

Typical questions about Tetramethylammonium sulfate ask you to (a) state it precisely, (b) apply it to given data, and (c) explain a limitation. Practise writing all three answers in under five minutes; the third part is what separates a full-mark answer from an average one.

Applications of Tetramethylammonium sulfate

In research
Tetramethylammonium sulfate appears in science research whenever the underlying quantities have to be modelled precisely. Papers usually cite it as a starting assumption and then explore where it breaks down.
In technology and industry
Engineering practice reuses Tetramethylammonium sulfate in design rules, simulations and safety margins. Knowing the idea lets you read a specification sheet and understand why the numbers look the way they do.
In the classroom
Tetramethylammonium sulfate is common in secondary-school and first-year university syllabi. It links to neighbouring topics Sulfates, Tetramethylammonium salts, so understanding it makes those chapters shorter.
In everyday life
Look for Tetramethylammonium sulfate outside the textbook — in sport, cooking, traffic, electronics or the sky above you. An example you found yourself is remembered far longer than one you were given.
